Topsy Turvy Fanfic Contest

Tue Apr 1, 2014, 12:00 AM

:new: Edit - Tomorrow, April 14th, is the last day to submit your entries! It's crunch time! :eager:

Once a year we throw a party here in town
Once a year we turn all Paris upside down
Ev'ry man's a king and ev'ry king's a clown
Once again it's Topsy Turvy Day
It's the day the devil in us gets released
It's the day we mock the prig and shock the priest
Ev'rything is topsy turvy at the Feast of Fools!

Why am I quoting Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame song lyrics? Perhaps because it's one of my favorite animated movies? Is it because it's April Fool's Day? Or maybe it's related to the contest I promised in the title?

Yes to all three! Boogie!

To celebrate April Fool's Day, I invite you to write a short "topsy turvy" fan fiction! A topsy turvy story (at least for the purposes for this contest) has everyone in opposite roles than normal. Bad guys are good guys and visa versa. You can even gender swap, if you like. Why not? It's April Fool's Day! :dummy: Just remember, all the characters have to act in a topsy turvy fashion.

Rules: Llama Dance PLZ

  • Your topsy turvy fan fiction must be specifically written for this contest and submitted after April 1st, 2014.
  • The contest will run until midnight (Pacific Time) April 14th, 2014.
  • It is a fan fiction contest. All stories must be fan fiction. All fandoms are acceptable.
  • All entries must follow deviantART submission guidelines! (No porn.)
  • Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!
  • Maximum word count: 1,000 words. This is meant to be a short contest. I'm not looking for any epics. =P
  • All characters in the story must be portrayed as opposite to their normal nature. Gender swapping is optional.
  • OCs are allowed but cannot be the main characters. I want to see characters acting topsy turvy and that's hard to judge with OCs.
  • And this one time, at band camp, I stuck a flute ... *cough*. :paranoid:
  • Entries will be judged on proper grammar use, how engaging they are and if they incorporate the theme.
  • Please note me Note your entry with the title "Topsy Turvy Contest" with your entry before the above deadline.
  • Mention this contest and link this journal somewhere in your deviation or artist comments.
  • Have fun! (Yeah, this one's not enforceable. :giggle:)
  • I am serious ... and don't call me Shirley.
  • :new: Clarification (before anyone tries this): Mirrorverse-type characters (characters that are already mirror opposites of the originals) can not be used in this because ... duh.

Prizes: likepoints

  • 1st Place - 1,000 Points
  • 2nd Place - 500 Points
  • 3rd Place - 250 Points
  • We're on a mission from God.
  • All entries will be featured in the winners' announcement journal, so everyone can enjoy your entries. :woohoo:

Random Bonus!

  • Guess my favorite character from Hunchback of Notre Dame and win Points ! I have set aside 300 Points to split between whoever guesses correctly.
  • Include your guess with the same note as your contest entry! Yes, you must participate in the contest for a chance at this.
  • What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? (Not part of the bonus. =P)
  • Same deadline applies.

Any questions? Please ask! Fella La

So, a crazy story about out-of-character portrayals due in a few hours? Wow!

I don't know. I originally posted it on April 1st. Maybe it was buried with the other contests that came out that day? :(

So I've noticed but you don't rush greatness. Though if I have time, perhaps I'll attempt something. If it's too sloppy then meh. I'll ignore it.

I'll let it slide this time.

I like how I find a contest that I can submit stuff, but the deadline is too close for me to actually do something for it. Your I have the time, but I can't really do the Transformers that I want seeing that the characters I usually use already have alter egos and multiverse opposites.

If you're referring to the Shattered Glass universe, it should be fine if you don't copy that source material. I'm more interested in deviants interpretations of an 'opposite' world. The Mirrorverse rule was to keep people from, for example, writing opposites of Shattered Glass characters who would be, essentially, the originals. I've actually received a couple Transformers entries. Please feel free to enter if you'd like! :)

Is mature content (specifically violence) allowed?

As long as it falls within dA's guidelines, then it's fine. :) If there's a question/concern about it, you can always tag it as mature.

I probably "over-tag" for violence; but I'd rather be safe than sorry, especially for a contest entry! Thank you.

Yeah, that'd be nice. It does say that a filter should be used for any content that could be triggering. We need a filter like the TV ratings, that list out why something is tagged.

Even if we just had a scale for each particular item: Mild, moderate, extreme. Mild, moderate, extreme violence. Mild/mod/ex sexual content.

I would rate my story for mild violence, moderate gore, with the caveat that the gore is 100% visibly bloodless.

Oh, I'm going to try to enter this!fiery evil laugh  I just got a brilliant idea.

Can I try guessing your favourite character here? And can I send a link to the fanfiction as a DA submission or do I have to type it out into a note?
^^; sorry for all the questions!

Send your guess and a link to your entry to me in a note. That way I can keep everything nicely organized. :)

And no problem! Please, if you have any questions, let me know!

Does it have to be at all happy? And can you enter more than once?
I'm working on a possible entry right now :D but it's not too cheerful... I do have an idea for a rather humorous story too though...

It doesn't have to be happy. Go with what you feel like writing. :)

I'm going to say one entry per person, just to make judging easier and to eliminate the question of winning multiple times.

 Yep, it's legit! It's meant to be a 'short' contest, so that's why the word limit is only 1000 words and its only two weeks long. I almost made it a flash fiction contest, but I thought I might get more interest with a slightly more flexible limit and timeframe.

(I could probably BS something relating to "shattered glass" to get mine through...)

If I weren't overcommitted I'd be all like "oh we should make an offbeat literary fanfiction" group for AUs, OCxCanon, and all the other stuff we don't allow that could have literary merit. But you'd need to be a grade-A jerk to run a group like that and maintain any kind of quality. So you definitely can't do it. :P

:XD: Thank you for calling me not-a-jerk.

I've actually wanted to make a CRfanfiction group (CR = community relations) group. That would be an official dA fan fiction group. Until I get my life back in order, I really can't make that commitment to another group. Of course, that group would have much looser standards of quality and canonity.

"Mirrorverse-type characters (characters that are already mirror opposites of the originals) can not be used in this because ... duh."

So that means the 2nd Dimension characters from Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension cannot be mirrorversed! =P

I was thinking of making all the good guys evil, while the only villain in that aforementioned show, Dr. Doofenshmirtz, is the good guy.

I thought Doofenshmirtz's alt-self was also evil in that one. He made the cyber-Perry and took over the city. The canon Doof ended up helping the main characters, didn't he? It's been awhile since I've seen it. The other alternate universe characters still had their same basic personalities (except Perry, because he was being controlled). That wasn't really a mirrorverse.

The mirrorverse rule references the classic Star Trek episode ("Mirror, Mirror") where Kirk and Spock run across their evil selves from another universe. So, if a person was to reverse characters that were already their canons' opposites, then they'd end up with ... canon characters. =P

You could certainly make Doof the sole good guy. Sounds like fun!
