Author's Note: This is for the Flash Fan Fiction theme “Vacation.” I chose to include the word, not necessarily the concept. Word count: 282

“Mal!” Inara grabbed the captain's arm and yanked him across the ballroom floor. She hissed under her breath, “What are you doing here?”

“What?” Bemused, he let her lead him away. They passed multiple party goers, dressed in layers of exotic silks and sipping from crystal champagne flutes. Subtle dance music floated over them, played by a small chamber orchestra with authentic wooden instruments. “Just enjoying the party, like you, s'all.”

“I'm working.” Inara glanced around the crowd.

“For a companion, working and all, shouldn't you be more gentle and friendly like?”

She glared at him. “You're not a client. You don't even belong here. Just look at that suit.”

“What? It's all fancy.”

“It's a Xiasheng Yen original. They're tailored. There is no way you'd have walked out with one of theirs with the shoulders too tight and the legs a quarter inch too short.”

“'Quarter inch too' …” Mal looked down. “How do you see that? And I only borrowed it, see.”

“Why are you here?”

“Can't a man relax, take a vacation from the rigors of life?”

Inara crossed her arms and leaned away from him. She raised an eyebrow.

Mal shrugged. “Mayhap we have a job planned, requires someone inside, mingling and all.”

“No, Mal,” Inara said, raising a hand to stop him. “Not here. Not when I have a client. Run your schemes and your heists, but not where I–” A distant alarm sounded, interrupting her. She and the other guests glanced around the ballroom in confusion. “What's that?”

“I reckon that's Jayne. Or, in technical like terms, that would be all hell breaking loose.”

This is for LiteraryFanFiction's weekly Flash Fan Fiction Friday. I flip flopped on who needed a "vacation" (to satisfy the theme), and then this came to mind. Gotta love Whedon-esque bickering and character relations. :)
